Nunavut requires qualifying certification to show that approved food safety training was completed within the previous five years. Complete approved training again before your certification falls outside that period. Proof of certification must be available to an Environmental Health Officer upon request.

Nunavut approved training providers and requirements

No. A food handler certificate demonstrates food safety training; a food premises permit authorizes an operation that requires a permit. Nunavut food premises permits are obtained through the Department of Health and must be renewed annually. Contact your Regional Environmental Health Officer about your business’s requirements.

Nunavut food premises permits  |  Regional Environmental Health Officers

Nunavut defines temporary food premises as those operating for fewer than 14 days per year. Section 42’s certification requirement does not apply to these premises. However, employees who directly contact food must still have food safety training or knowledge under the applicable Code requirements. Permits and other requirements may still apply; confirm your arrangements with your Regional Environmental Health Officer.

Yes. Nunavut’s regulations recognize the importance of country food and Inuit harvesting rights. Country food is generally exempt from the Food Safety Regulations, but exceptions include commercial processing and certain licensed operations. Restaurants and institutions serving country food must follow applicable requirements. A food handler certificate alone does not establish whether a particular country food activity is permitted.

Nunavut country food guidance

The requirements depend on the food and your operation. Premises handling only qualifying low-risk foods may be exempt from the Food Safety Regulations, including the certification requirement. Nunavut allows certain low-risk homemade foods to be sold without a food premises permit. Medium- and high-risk foods generally require preparation in permitted premises, while country food has separate rules. Confirm your products and selling arrangements with your Regional Environmental Health Officer.
