The regular MAPAQ pathways require at least six hours for handlers and twelve hours for managers; recognized equivalent courses may follow their own approved format.

MAPAQ-issued food handler and manager attestations are valid for life. INDOCERT currently states a five-year validity period for its own certificate. A provider’s certificate policy is different from the lifespan of a MAPAQ-issued attestation; confirm how an older equivalent certificate applies to your situation with MAPAQ.

Yes, if your activities require a permit. A training certificate does not replace a food business permit. Since July 8, 2025, new permit applicants no longer need to provide a hygiene and food safety manager number, but the obligation to place food safety under a qualified manager remains.
Preparing meals for sale from a home kitchen generally requires a restaurant permit. Quebec’s home-kitchen rules include direct sales to consumers, a maximum of 100 kg of food handled per month and manager training for the operator. Confirm the permit and municipal requirements for your specific activity before starting.
